Pin-on-disk test
To determine adhesive wear in metal-to-metal contacts, the ISAF operates a non-standardized test rig. In this test, a cylindrical specimen is pressed against a rotating disc or ring under a defined load. The torque is continuously measured, thereby determining the coefficient of friction µ. As an additional option, it is possible to measure the specimen’s temperature rise. The test can be conducted under both dry and lubricated conditions. The test rig can be operated with various motor-gearbox configurations. This allows for sliding speeds ranging from 1 cm/min to 4 cm/min or from 0.5 m/s to 20 m/s at contact pressures of up to 10 MPa (depending on the specimen geometry).
